Your goal to getting dressed for the office is to project a professional, competent image. Here you can find some guidelines about what to wear to work for a polished, professional look. So, read on.
In general, the more distracting a piece of clothing or jewelry is, the less appropriate it is for office wear.
- Color plays an important role in professional image. Traditional career colors include red (aggressive), navy (trustworthy), gray (conservative), and black (chic). Most of these colors work well in pantsuits, shirts and shoes and can be mixed with softer feminine colors like ice blue, lilac, soft pink and ivory. Loud colors like hot pink and bold prints are not quite appropriate for the office wear.
- Avoid jewelry that jungles like chandelier earrings, stacks of bangles, as these are distracting. Instead, go for stud earrings or single bracelets.
- As for handbags, choose structured styles that express an organized image.
- Most of what constitutes a polished image is in the details: manicured nails, run-free hose, scuff-free shoes, neat hair.
- Your garments should fit well your figure. Pants should be fitted, but free of visible panty lines. Skirts should be loose enough to sit down comfortably. Jackets should be able to be buttoned. And blouses shouldn’t gap between buttonholes.
Here are the looks you should avoid in the workplace:
- Too sexy: see-through lace, miniskirts, spaghetti straps, sheer sundresses, strappy stiletto sandals.
- Too casual: jeans, shorts, T-shirts, hats, sneakers.
- Too sloppy: wrinkled clothing, too many layers, and baggy clothes.

Mini skirts are all about showing off your legs. Take a look at some of the best choices in shoes to wear with short skirts, as well as a few styles to avoid:
Flip-flops. If you’re going casual, you can go for flip-flops or other flat sandals. If the skirt is simple, such as a denim mini, you can wear sandals that have beading, sequins or metallic detailing for a great look.
Sneakers. It’s definitely a casual look, but sneakers go well with a short skirt, such as denim mini. Stay away from puffy, cross-trainers, and go for a streamlined classic.
Wedge sandals. Espadrille, bohemian, strappy and woven styles are all great choices, but remember they should be sandals – as in open-toed. A closed-toe wedge is a little too heavy for a casual short skirt.
Flats. Ballet flats and skimmers don’t go well with longer skirts, but they look great with short skirts. Choose a pretty and simple style, and pair it with a casual or semi-casual mini skirt.
Tall boots. Flat or heeled, knee-high boots or boots that fall just below the knee are a great choice to wear with shorter skirts, but the boots should have a simple design.
Kitten heels. Kitten heels work well with short skirts. Thongs, slides, and strappy sandals with a small, low heel look great with a mini skirt.
Shoes to be careful with
What we see on the runways isn’t always the best look for real life, or all body types.
Ankle boots can make some women’s legs look bulkier and shorter than they actually are. Ankle boots should be avoided by women with very thin legs, as skinny calves could appear to be swimming inside of ankle boots.
Stiletto heels are not that comfortable, but they make women’s legs look sexier than any other type of shoe. If you feel comfortable wearing stiletto heels, then go for them.
High heeled pumps can sometimes be a bit too heavy looking for most short skirts.
Footwear to avoid with short skirts
You should avoid wearing the following shoes as they are too bulky for most short skirts: oxfords, bulky shoes, cross-trainers, clogs, socks.
Make the right choice and wear the right shoes that will show off your legs and complement your look!

Here are several useful tips that can help you choose the right dresses to flatter every body type. So, read on.
Bottom-heavy figure
If you have a bottom-heavy figure, you should find a dress that skims over the lower half of the body. Fuller skirts cover heavy hips, while showing off the waist. Choose a fitted halter or strapless silhouette, which emphasizes a trim upper body.
Flabby arms
Dresses with lantern sleeves, puff sleeves, kimono or bracelet sleeves are flattering for ladies with flabby arms.
Petite
To flatter a smaller frame, choose a dress with a lot of shape. Stay away from too-cutesy looks, like puffed sleeves, so you won’t look little girlish.
Plus size
Just because your figure has curves doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a pretty sleeveless dress. Try a dress with an allover print, as it will make your body look thinner.
Unattractive legs
If you don’t want to show off your legs, you can still look great in a dress, instead of hiding your legs in pants. Choose a longer skirt (midcalf or longer) for a flattering look.
Wide shoulders
If your shoulders are wide, you don’t need to hide your upper body. Instead, choose body-balancing details like a trendy asymmetrical neckline. Stay away from puffy sleeves or voluminous tops paired with slim bottoms, as they will make your shoulder look even wider.
Thick waist
You can disguise a thick waist by either raising, lowering or eliminating the waistline, as this will skim your body without defining the waist. You can also go for a drop-waist dress, which hits somewhere around the hipbones, or empire waist dresses which have a raised waist to flatter a thick waist.
Full bust
The V-necks, square necks or wrap styles are the most flattering necklines for the full bust. Choose fabrics that skim (jersey is good), and avoid those that are clingy or too stiff. As well, stay away from ornate necklines, embellished bodices and blouson styles.
Small bust
To add more volume up top, you should look for embellishment or fullness on the bust. An empire waist dress that features a gathered bodice, allover print and a cap sleeve will flatter your figure, giving the illusion of a wider shoulder and more substantial upper body.

Here are several ways that can help you look flattering in jeans:
1. Camisole + Jeans
Wear your jeans with a silky camisole that has a rich jewel tone and embellishment. The longer camisoles often feature ribbons, lace and a draping, uneven hem.
2. Tunic + Jeans
Pair your jeans with an ethnic tunic. Add a wood bangle bracelet or straw handbag to complement your outfit.
3. Long/Short + Jeans
Play with proportions by layering. Wear your jeans with a teensy shrug over a longer top. You can also choose shrunken, layered T-shirts or polos.
4. Blazer + Jeans
Pair your jeans with a blazer. Keep the jacket fitted and cropped for an updated look.
5. Cuff + Jeans
Roll up your straight-leg jeans to create a cuff. Pair them with boots, ballet flats or embellished high heel sandals.
6. Belt + Jeans
Use a low-slung belt in a sparkle or metallic color to add interest and style to your look.
7. Black + Jeans
Put on something black and wear it with jeans for a dressier look. Add sexy sandals to finish the look.
8. Ruffles + Jeans
Wear your jeans with a ruffled top to add a feminine touch to your outfit.
9. Accessories + Jeans
Add some accessories like a belt, a tie or a long scarf for a belt over your jeans to add interest to your outfit.
Be creative, use your imagination and come up with interesting mixes to update your look and keep your style fresh!

Take a look at some of the most popular summer 2009 shoe trends for women:
Light neutral shoes
Light neutrals are popular this season. Beiges, creams, taupes and tans are great for pairing with brights and whites, making them ideal for warm weather.
Fringe, beads and baubles: Bohemian shoes
Fringe, beads, stones and other embellishments are present this summer. The bohemian look can vary from laid-back hippie to cosmopolitan chic, but it’s always fun and full of excitement.
Metallic shoes: shades of silver and gold
Flat sandals in silver, gold, and pewter are a perfect choice if you want to add a touch of glam to an otherwise casual outfit.
Collar and cuff sandals
This season every kind of sandal features ankle straps. It’s not about just simple straps, but sandals with ankle collars and cuffs. Some collar sandals aren’t so extreme – they are more like wide ankle straps. But in other cases, the collars actually extend several inches up the leg. To minimize the leg-shortening effects of these trendy styles, you should pair these sandals with short shorts or skirts.
Heavy metal shoes
Heavy-metal footwear is another popular trend this summer. Hardware details, studs, buckles and zippers are adorning everything from skimpy flats to sky-high heels.
Gladiator sandals
Gladiator sandal trend includes more traditional styles with Greco-Roman overtones and is extremely hot this summer.
Dressy flat sandals
A pair of dressy flat sandals is a must-have this summer. This versatile item can add a laid-back touch to dressier clothes, and an instant style to casual attire.
Orange and pink shoes
This season is all about bright colors. Pink and orange shoes are especially hot, but there’s no shortage of yellows, reds and greens either.
Wedge heels
Wedge heels are back this summer. One of the best things about shoes and sandals with wedge heels is that they are very comfortable and are preferred by most women.
